     •   HIV/AIDS Prevention Program
 
SARD initiated a HIV/AIDS Workplace Intervention Project in the Organized Power Sector of Delhi with support from Family Health International. The project was implemented in the GENCO & TRANSCO power plants and residential colonies, New Delhi. The main aim of the project was to create workplace-based model for HIV/AIDS prevention and care by reducing the vulnerability of the employees of GENCO and TRANSCO of the Delhi power sector and their family members to HIV/AIDS and STIs. It also endeavoured to create a sensitive and enabling environment and to develop a HIV/AIDS policy in the target area.

Overall Goal: To build the capacity of school principals, teachers and students on HIV/AIDS and life skills education
Objectives: To increase involvement of school going children (especially adolescents), principals and teachers in various activities related to life skills education and HIV/AIDS prevention
Strategies: Conduct participatory orientation workshops on HIV/AIDS for school principals and teachers with participation from
  government education officials
  Select teachers as nodal teachers to ensure student participation in different program activities
  Conduct six 2-hour sessions on various aspects of HIV/AIDS and related subjects (e.g. sexuality and peer pressure) with groups of 30 students from each school
  Train students as peer educators
  Distribution of IEC material provided by DSACS and UNESCO
  Hold inter school painting & essay competitions to celebrate World AIDS Day

Achievements:

Initial inhibitions on the part of participants were methodically overcome and issues relating to AIDS were discussed very freely

 

SARD sits on the School Welfare Committees (formed under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan) of 2 government senior secondary schools in Delhi
